Zuckerberg le pone límites a Beacon

El pasado día 5 Mark Zuckerberg publicaba en el blog de Facebook una nota en la que se disculpaba de la siguiente manera:

"...We've made a lot of mistakes building this feature, but we've made even more with how we've handled them. We simply did a bad job with this release, and I apologize for it.::" (hemos cometido un montón de errores creando esta funcionalidad, pero hemos hecho todavía más en la manera en la que la hemos manejado. Sencillamente hemos hecho un mal trabajo en esta release, y pido disculpas por ello)

Esta iniciativa de Zuckerber se debe a la recogida de más de 50.000 firmas de la plataforma para la protección de los derechos de los internautas MoveOn para expresar su disconformidad a que Facebook utilice las acciones de sus usuarios en sites asociados a Beacon para difundirlas entre la red de amigos de dicho usuario (ver descripción en post anterior).

Tal y como debería haber sido desde el inicio (al menos en mi opinión) ahora Facebook ofrecerá a sus usuarios la posibilidad de suscribirse voluntariamente al programa Beacon. Por una lado el programa se convierte en mucho más relevante para aquellos usuarios que decidan participar en él pero por otro Zuckerberg necesita plantearse cómo va a incentivar a los usuarios para que realmente deseen formar parte del programa y tener una masa suficiente para que sea interesante para que muchos sites se suscriban a Beacon y saquen provecho de esta plataforma publicitaria.

Pero ¿será verdad las palabras de Zuckerberg cuando afirma que el problema de su planteamiento radica en una cuestión de balance? Más bien parece que Zuckerberg, asesorado por su flamante nuevo VP de marketing de producto y operaciones Chamath Palihapitiya, puso todas las variables en la balanza y decidió optar por la opción más rentable para su negocio.

Ahora son los propios usuarios haciendo uso de herramientas, similares a las que ofrece el propio Facebook en beneficio de sus usuarios, para unirse y hacer que Facebook cambie su filosofía. Será interesante seguir los próximos pasos de Facebook para hacer de Beacon un éxito, la idea original es más que interesante.
